Malta’s population has increased by 4% over the last year, and gentrification is disrupting the traditional makeup of neighbourhoods. So how can we build a sustainable future?

Located in San Gwann, near Valletta, at the meeting point between suburban housing and former industrial areas, this proposal introduces a new Blood, Cells and Tissue Clinic within a transitional urban context. The project responds to this condition through a contemporary and articulated volumetric strategy, conceived as a stacked composition of limestone blocks.

The building is organised to remain closely connected to the exterior. The position and varying dimensions of the volumes create platforms that allow natural light to reach interior rooms. At the same time, the overlaps between blocks generate exterior spaces conceived as gardens and green roofs, either directly associated with adjacent interior areas or functioning as environmental buffers within the overall mass.

Materiality plays a central role in the project’s relationship with place. From some of the world’s oldest free-standing temples to dry-stone rubble walls, fortifications, churches, palazzos, and modest townhouses, Malta’s architectural history is deeply rooted in limestone. This material has shaped both the island’s landscape and its built culture over centuries.

Drawing on this continuity, the proposal integrates limestone as a contemporary construction material rather than a symbolic reference. Recycled limestone blocks are used to align traditional building knowledge with current environmental concerns, contributing to reduced material extraction, lower energy consumption, and decreased CO₂ emissions. In this way, the project seeks to build an enduring future by working with local material intelligence while responding to the technical and environmental demands of a specialised healthcare facility.
