Natural Alliance

Tampere, Finland

Urban Plan

2019

Tampere has always been a frontrunner in the innovation exchange with the rest of Finland. Natural Alliance builds on this context with a proposal for Viinikanlahti that treats urban nature as the project’s primary infrastructure, not as a decorative layer. The aim is to shape a district identity rooted in a site-specific blue-green landscape while improving climate resilience and everyday liveability.

Through inclusive collaboration with the people of Tampere, the aim is to design, cultivate, and nurture a rich, sensorial, varied, blue-green, and site-specific blue-green urban nature within Viinikanlahti. This bottom-up approach positions landscape as a shared resource, capable of accommodating change while reinforcing continuity. Viinikanlahti is therefore imagined as a district where the lake and the city meet through a legible public realm, supporting daily routines as well as seasonal use by residents and visitors.

A central move is the reconfiguration of the shoreline. By redesigning the waterfront edge, the project restores Tampere’s relationship with the water and increases the length of the shoreline through a more articulated geometry. This expands access and strengthens contact between land and lake, while establishing a continuous coastal framework for movement, recreation, and future growth.

Urban form follows this landscape strategy. A denser grid structures the district towards the city, gradually transitioning into a more human-scale, walkable environment as it approaches the shoreline. Along the lake promenade, vegetation and water elements are woven into a sequence of social spaces and activities, offering different degrees of exposure, pause, and gathering.

Natural Alliance also frames housing and community as part of the same system. By prioritising affordability, sustainability, and communal living, the project proposes a district that supports social interaction, economic opportunity, and environmental stewardship, using landscape and public space as the organising medium for collective urban life.
