Kjøpmannsgata, Finland

Urban Plan

2017

The Kjøpmannsgata area occupies a strategic position in Trondheim, where the historic city meets the Nidelva river. Shaped by trade, port activity, and Cicignon’s urban plan, the site retains significant cultural and environmental value.

The proposal seeks to restore the historic relationship between the city and the Nidelva without imposing invasive transformations. Rather than altering the existing ground or erasing historical layers, the project works through calibrated interventions that reinforce continuity, improve accessibility, and reposition public space as the primary structuring element.

A sequence of squares forms the backbone of the strategy. Each square develops a distinct character while remaining connected through Kjøpmannsgata as a programmatic thread. Together, they establish a continuous civic landscape capable of accommodating daily life as well as larger events.

Bybroparken operates as a transition between urban fabric and natural landscape, supporting educational and community-oriented activities. Kongens gate allmenning strengthens the link between Torvet and the river, allowing direct access to the water and extending cultural institutions into the public realm. Dronningens gate allmenning consolidates transport-related functions into a more pedestrian-friendly mobility hub. Mustallmenningen resolves topographical discontinuities through new connections to Bakke Bru while introducing recreational and sports facilities. Krigsseilerplassen, the largest of the squares, becomes a flexible event space capable of hosting markets, festivals, and public gatherings.

Kjøpmannsgata itself is redefined as a shared urban corridor. Traffic is redistributed to reduce vehicular dominance, with the lower level prioritised for pedestrians and cyclists. Connections between the upper and lower streets are reinforced through paths aligned with existing desire lines, ensuring that movement patterns remain intuitive and legible.
