Whisper Wall

Certain urban spaces resist clear definition. They exist between functions, shaped by provisional decisions that quietly solidify over time. Neither fully abandoned nor meaningfully inhabited, they are often crossed rather than occupied, perceived as gaps rather than places. At the edge of Logroño’s historic centre, the Revellín car park sits between different orders of the city. The line of the wall nearby introduces a clear historical presence, while the archaeological site condition at its perimeter holds a deeper time beneath the everyday surface of infrastructure. Conceived as a functional solution, the site is efficient but rarely civic, more a threshold than a place. The intervention starts from this tension, proposing a temporary structure that mediates between city, archaeology and contemporary urban life by introducing comfort, pause and shared use where there is usually only passage.

The installation is composed of a series of contiguous timber seats designed to operate as a flexible social device. Arranged in a serpentine configuration, the structure follows a longer linear logic that echoes the presence of the wall and supports informal gathering along its length. When assembled in a circular form, it creates a more contained spatial condition, closer to an arena or a room without walls, suitable for conversations, readings, small performances or collective moments during the festival.

The seats are generous armchair-like elements with overhead shading, inviting people to recline, lie down and remain. Their continuity encourages proximity, while the openings carved between units allow views, whispers and gestures to travel along the structure. In this way, it supports different intensities of use, from quiet rest and conversation to attentive listening or spontaneous performance, making space for both presence and pause. Beyond programmed events, it invites everyday use, allowing the site to be experienced differently and at a slower pace.

Construction follows a careful economy of means. The timber panels are cut with attention to yield, and the material is used as fully as possible. Fixings are kept simple and unobtrusive, prioritising lightness, ease of handling, and quick assembly. The result is a structure that can be installed and removed without claiming the site, while still expressing a clear material discipline and a consistent language across all parts. For a limited time, the installation reactivates a residual urban condition, revealing how attention, comfort and shared presence can momentarily transform a space defined by passage into a place of encounter.
