Bairro Hollywood House is a single-family dwelling located in Porto’s Campo Alegre area, within the Hollywood Neighbourhood (Bairro Guerra Junqueiro). The area is defined by a regular and homogeneous fabric of two-storey townhouses, where repetition and alignment establish a clear street character and leave little room for formal deviation.
The project occupies a narrow and elongated rectangular plot, constrained by party walls and limited lateral exposure. An existing indoor swimming pool previously occupied much of the site and was removed as part of the intervention, allowing the new house to be conceived through a clearer relationship between built volume, open space, and garden.
Rather than respond to these constraints through formal complexity, the proposal operates through sections. The house is lifted from the ground, freeing the ground floor and transforming it into a continuous spatial plane shared between interior and exterior. This decision allows light, air, and movement to circulate more freely across the site, mitigating the limitations imposed by the plot’s dimensions and urban density.
The elevated volume contains the main domestic spaces, while two additional volumes organise vertical circulation and connect the different levels of the house. Together, these elements establish a simple and legible structural system that negotiates the constraints of the site while expanding the experience of space at ground level. In this way, the project reinterprets a tightly regulated urban condition through openness and continuity, without breaking the underlying order of the neighbourhood.
