Built in 1950 as part of Porto’s urban expansion policies, Cooperativa O Lar Familiar is a 71-house neighbourhood designed by architect Mário Bonito. Over time, and largely through the cultural life of its residents, it became known as Bairro dos Músicos (Musicians’ Quarter). Its urban layout introduced a then-new street-facing fabric, while its housing typologies combined stacked townhouses, single-family and two-family dwellings, and a distinct architectural language shaped by colour, oblique roof and façade lines, pilotis, shading canopies, and hollow brickwork.

The project site spans two adjoining but contrasting conditions. One portion fronts Rua Ciríaco Cardoso, a denser, higher-traffic street defined by a sequence of collective housing blocks. The other faces Praceta Professor Luís Costa, within the quieter, low-rise fabric of Bairro dos Músicos. The central challenge is to work across these two realities and propose a coherent intervention without forcing a single formal response.

Topography prevents a direct connection between the two parts of the plot, leading to a strategy of two distinct buildings. Along Rua Ciríaco Cardoso, the proposal introduces a more compact collective housing volume, largely composed of smaller apartments conceived for short- and medium-term stays. Within the calmer interior condition, two volumes accommodate larger units with gardens, oriented towards family living and the scale of the neighbourhood.

Material and façade strategies follow this duality. The street-facing building adopts a more urban expression, using contemporary materials such as metal cladding and a direct relationship with the street. The volumes facing the neighbourhood respond differently in scale and tone, with brick cladding and a more measured threshold between inside and outside. Together, the two parts form a single project that negotiates density, use, and architectural character across Porto’s modern residential heritage and its contemporary housing demands.
