The bridges spanning the Douro River between Porto and Vila Nova de Gaia form an essential part of the region’s landscape and civic identity. Six crossings connect the two banks, from east to west: Freixo Bridge, São João Bridge, Maria Pia Bridge, Infante D. Henrique Bridge, Luís I Bridge, and Arrábida Bridge, each associated with a distinct historical moment and structural language.

The proposed new bridge is located between Freixo and São João and is named after Bishop D. António Francisco dos Santos. It spans approximately 300 metres and connects Avenida Paiva Couceiro, in the Municipality of Porto, to a new road infrastructure in the Municipality of Vila Nova de Gaia, linking to Rotunda Gil Eanes. The deck is set at nearly 18 metres, higher than the lower deck of Luís I Bridge and significantly lower than Freixo Bridge, positioning the crossing as an intermediate piece within the sequence of Douro infrastructures. The project starts from a careful reading of the north bank as a continuous landscape system. Here, the solidity of the built city is supported by geometric retaining walls that gradually give way to more organic contours and cultivated terraces, historically linked to the production of Port wine. This transition between constructed geometry and terraced ground is treated as a single landscape continuum, shaped over time and defined by the relationship between slope, quay, and river edge. The bridge is conceived as part of this larger whole, working with the existing topography and the layered character of the riverbank.

On the north bank, the proposal preserves the existing treatment of the slope while integrating the new conditions introduced by the bridge, the elevated roundabout, access points, and the reconfiguration of the waterfront. A key operation is the demolition of the filling station, retaining its rear wall. This clears the centre of the roundabout and makes space for dense planting of large trees, establishing a new green landmark aligned with the bridge level and visible along its approach.

This planted area extends to the west and east between the quay, the waterfront road, the bridge access points, and the terraces defined by existing retaining walls and the factory wall. The project also identifies the importance of continuing this green system beyond the immediate competition boundary, allowing it to operate as a maintenance route along the river and as a continuous ecological presence on the Douro banks. Public amenities such as a cafeteria, reading room, or other services are positioned within the broader green area, avoiding the roundabout’s cleared centre and preserving it as a significant open landscape space. Pedestrian paths and designated equipment structure use within the wooded area, supporting everyday recreation without compromising the legibility of the riverbank.
